Living with the End in View

By Rooted Africa (

Jonathan Edwards had resolved to live with full vigour while life lasts (Resolution 6) and to redeem every moment (Resolution 5). Now he added a powerful test for every action: Would I do this if death were imminent? At nineteen, he kept eternity close, refusing anything he couldn't face at life's final hour.
Resolution 7
Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life.

In simple terms, Edwards resolved never to engage in any thought, word, or deed he would regret or fear if he knew it was his final hour on earth. This resolution sharpens the earlier ones. If God's glory is supreme and time is short, then every choice should stand the test of death's nearness. Edwards wanted a life free of hidden shame, secret sins, or wasted opportunities—ready to meet God at any moment. Why This Matters TodayWe often act as if tomorrow is guaranteed, indulging habits or compromises we'd never defend on our deathbed. Edwards forces the question: Would I be comfortable doing this if Christ returned or death came now? This perspective cuts through excuses and aligns daily life with eternal reality.Applying Resolution 7 Practically
  • Pause before acting: Ask, “Would I do this if it were my last hour?”
  • Reject hidden compromise: Avoid secret thoughts, words, or actions that would bring fear at the end.
  • Pursue what endures: Choose love, faithfulness, and obedience that bring peace in that final moment.
  • Live ready: Let this awareness fuel urgency in devotion, relationships, and service.
Reflection Questions
  • What activity or habit would I hesitate to do if death were near?
  • How does this test expose areas needing change?
  • What would I prioritize more if eternity felt closer?
Edwards reviewed his resolutions weekly to keep this eternal perspective sharp. Regular reflection helps us live with the end in view.Resolution 7 calls us to integrity and urgency: live so that no action would cause regret at life's close. What does this resolution reveal in your own life?  Living with All Your Might

By Rooted Africa (

Jonathan Edwards had resolved to redeem every moment (Resolution 5) and to make every action serve God's glory (Resolution 4). Now he intensified the call: don't just use time—pour yourself fully into life while it lasts. At nineteen, he grasped the brevity of life and the urgency of wholehearted living.

Resolution 6
Resolved, to live with all my might, while I do live.
In simple terms: Edwards resolved to live with maximum energy, vigour, and intensity for as long as he had breath. No half-measures, no holding back—full engagement in pursuing God's purposes every day.
This resolution builds on the previous ones. Since time is fleeting and every moment should glorify God, Edwards determined to seize life actively and purposefully, not drift through it passively. He wanted a life of fervent devotion, diligent work, and joyful service—giving everything he had while he had it.Why This Matters TodayLife is short. Days blur into weeks, years pass quickly. It's easy to coast, to give partial effort, or to save energy for "later." Edwards challenges us: Why hold back? Give your full strength now—to God, to relationships, to the tasks before you—because tomorrow is not promised. This isn't about burnout or frantic activity. It's about wholeheartedness: living intentionally, with passion and focus, for what truly lasts.Applying Resolution 6 Practically
  • Engage fully: Whether praying, working, loving, or resting, do it with all your heart.
  • Fight passivity: When you sense drifting or minimal effort, stir yourself to greater zeal.
  • Channel energy wisely: Direct your "might" toward what honours God—diligence in duty, love in relationships, faithfulness in trials.
  • Rely on grace: True vigour comes from God. Pray for strength to live this way.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my life am I giving only partial effort?
  • What would change if I committed to living "with all my might" today?
  • How can I depend on God for renewed energy?
Edwards reviewed his resolutions weekly to keep this fire alive. Regular reflection helps sustain wholehearted pursuit. Resolution 6 calls us to vigorous, purposeful living—giving our all while we live, for God's glory.
